SUMMARY:Demystifying California Family Law for Mental Health Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Navigating family law can be challenging for mental health professionals\, even those with experience in divorce-related cases. \nThis interactive workshop is designed to bridge that knowledge gap\, offering both newcomers and seasoned therapists a clear\, practical overview of California Family Law as it relates to their work. Led by a psychologist-mediator and an attorney-mediator\, participants will gain essential insights into the legal issues most commonly encountered by mental health providers – such as community property\, custody arrangements\, support obligations\, the documentation of agreements\, and general court requirements. \nThrough real-world examples and discussion\, attendees will learn how family law impacts their roles as mediators\, co-parent counselors\, court-appointed therapists\, and child therapists. The ultimate goal of this workshop is to empower mental health professionals to confidently engage in family law practice\, fostering collaboration and understanding between legal and therapeutic disciplines. \nWhy This Training\nMental health professionals working with divorcing or separating families often find themselves navigating complex legal systems without formal training in family law. This can lead to uncertainty\, confusion\, and missed opportunities to best support clients. This workshop helps therapists and related professionals bridge that gap\, offering a clear\, practical understanding of California Family Law as it intersects with their clinical work. \nParticipants will learn how legal frameworks influence the roles of mediators\, co-parent counselors\, child therapists\, and court-involved professionals. With a focus on real-world application\, this training empowers therapists to engage confidently and ethically in family law contexts. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nUsing real cases\, discussion\, and applied examples\, this workshop will help participants: \n\nUnderstand the structure of the California family law system\nIdentify how property division\, custody\, and support obligations impact therapeutic work\nGain clarity on how to document agreements and interface with the court system\nLearn the boundaries and ethical considerations for mental health professionals in legal matters\nIncrease confidence in roles such as mediator\, co-parent counselor\, or court-appointed therapist\nBuild collaborative bridges with legal professionals while maintaining clinical integrity\n\nWho Should Attend\nThis training is for therapists\, counselors\, psychologists\, and other mental health professionals working with families navigating divorce\, custody disputes\, and other family law-related challenges. \n\nCo-parenting counselors will gain a framework for how custody and parenting plans are structured\, helping them guide families within realistic legal boundaries.\nChild therapists and evaluators will develop a deeper understanding of court expectations and documentation protocols\, especially when serving in court-appointed or consulting roles.\nMediators and collaborative professionals will benefit from the presenters’ integrative approach that honors both psychological and legal perspectives\, creating space for more durable and child-centered outcomes.\nNewer professionals will leave with a foundational orientation\, while seasoned clinicians will deepen their understanding and clarify the limits and possibilities of their roles in legal processes.\n\nWhy It Matters\nMental health professionals are often a critical part of the support system during divorce and custody disputes – but without legal fluency\, their contributions can be undermined or misunderstood. This training helps ensure that therapists can: \n\nCollaborate more effectively with attorneys and the courts\nReduce ethical risk and confusion in their practice\nSupport clients with informed\, grounded guidance\nImprove outcomes for children and families in transition\n\nParticipants will leave with knowledge that is immediately applicable in their work – whether in therapy\, mediation\, or consultation – and a stronger foundation for navigating the increasingly interdisciplinary world of family conflict. \nLearning Outcomes\nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nRecognize core components of California Family Law relevant to property division\, custody\, and support\nUnderstand their professional role within legal contexts – including when and how to participate ethically in mediation\, court appointments\, or as part of collaborative teams\nIdentify legal issues most likely to arise in their work with divorcing or separating families\nCommunicate more effectively with attorneys\, judges\, and clients around legal matters\nReduce risk of overstepping legal boundaries while remaining a strong advocate for client wellbeing\n\n  \nFormat & Details\nDate & Time: Friday\, May 15\, 2026 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \nLocation: Live Online (Zoom) \nCost: $150 \nAbout the Center\nThe Center for Understanding in Conflict pioneered understanding-based mediation and is one of the first and only nonprofit conflict resolution training organizations worldwide. \nSince 1982\, the Center has trained more than 10\,000 professionals worldwide\, including leaders from the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation\, Intel Corporation\, Roche\, SAP and the World Intellectual Property Organization. SUMMARY:24-Hour Basic Mediation Training (East Coast)
DESCRIPTION:24-Hour Basic Mediation Training (East Coast) \nTuesday\, June 2 through Thursday June 4\, 2026.\n9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern \n(Scroll to bottom of this page to register) \n_______________ \nJoin the Center for Understanding in Conflict for a comprehensive 24-hour Basic Mediation Training designed to transform the way you approach conflict. In this dynamic\, experiential program\, you’ll learn the core principles and skills of the Understanding-Based model — a humane\, relationship-centered approach that helps people work through conflict with clarity\, respect\, and connection. \nThis certificate program provides both the theoretical foundation and practical skills to help people navigate conflict constructively.  Participants will learn how to shift the way parties view their conflict\, empowering them to work cooperatively to find mutually acceptable solutions. Core skills include deescalating unproductive arguments\, understanding conflict dynamics\, and guiding parties toward productive dialogue and effective decision-making. The training also explores the role of law and lawyers in mediation\, and prepares participants to mediate conflicts in a range of  settings–from private and workplace disputes to court-referred cases\, and community disputes. \nUpon successfully completing this training\, participants will have satisfied the requirements for the Basic Mediation Training of Part 146 of the NYS Rules of the Chief Administrator of the Courts (“Part 146”) and be eligible to pursue any part 146 advanced mediation training\, including the 16-hour Advanced Matrimonial Mediation Training course offered by the Center for Understanding in Conflict on June 17\, 18\, 25\, & 26\, 2026. Together\, these two programs satisfy both the Basic and Advanced Matrimonial trainings portions required to apply for Part 146 certification. \nWhile this program meets the training requirements for those seeking  to apply as mediators on NYS court rosters\, we welcome professionals across other disciplines – jurists\, lawyers\, collaborative professionals\, business consultants\, executive coaches\, managers and supervisors\, human resources professionals\, ombuds-people\, non-profit staff\, and anyone who works with parties in conflict will gain invaluable conflict resolution skills that they can put to work in many aspects of their professional and personal life. \n \nCore Concepts\nIn this 24-hour program\, adapted from our gold standard 5-day mediation training\, you will learn how to support parties in conflict or in other important conversations in a new and transformative way. \nOur Understanding-Based model focuses on helping parties make knowing and informed choices together in an atmosphere of respect.  Highlights include: \n\nPositive neutrality –supporting all parties without taking sides.\nThe Loop of Understanding – enhancing understanding and empathy.\nCreative Options — innovating to meet differing needs and interests.\nA Foundation for the Future — building the groundwork for the parties to make effective and lasting decisions together now and in the future.\n\nWhat is the Format of this Training?\nThis hands-on in person training features short lectures on the core skills of the Understanding Based Approach\, followed by lively demonstrations and immersive role-plays. Realistic simulations\, in which participants work through mediations from beginning to end with personalized coaching from our teachers\, offer participants the chance to hone their skills and experience the challenges faced by parties in dispute. The combination of theory\, observation\, and practice creates an engaging and rewarding learning experience that participants consistently describe as both enjoyable and deeply impactful. \n \nLogistics\nThe training runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday\, June 2 through Thursday June 4\, 2026. \nOn Thursday night\, we have an optional informal discussion over dinner nearby from 6:15 pm to 7:45: p.m. Dinner is not included in the price; participants will have an option to pay for their own meal. \nAll participants will enjoy lunch\, coffee\, tea and snacks during the breaks. \nWho Can Participate?\nThis basic training is open to anyone whose work involves conflict and will be particularly interesting to lawyers who wish to apply to be on the mediator court rosters for divorce and family work. \nWho Are the Trainers?\nIvan Alter is an attorney and mediator with offices in Westchester County\, New York\, and New York City. Practicing law since 1993\, Ivan traded in an early career spent litigating complex commercial matters and high-conflict matrimonial cases in favor of a more rewarding practice using the understanding-based model. \nIvan left the courtroom for good twenty years ago and today empowers his clients to design satisfying resolutions to their conflicts through mediation and collaborative law. He is a graduate of Brandeis University (B.A.)\, Brooklyn Law School (J.D.)\, and Columbia University (M.S.). Having participated in countless training programs and symposia\, Ivan currently serves on the board of directors for the Center for Understanding in Conflict and the New York Association of Collaborative Professionals. \n Michelle Exline Minovi is a divorce and family mediator with 12+ years family law experience.  As Managing Attorney at the legal services non-profit Ayuda in Washington\, D.C.\, Michelle represented low-income and Spanish-speaking immigrant clients in complex matrimonial cases in the context of domestic violence. Michelle knew she had to pivot from litigation to mediation when she took her first mediation training at the Center for Understanding Conflict. \nShe is on the roster of mediation professionals approved by the matrimonial Supreme Court in Kings\, New York\, and Queens counties as well as the borough-wide Custody and Visitation mediation panel and the Child Permanency panel. She sits on the board of the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York and is a member of the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation. Michelle is an experienced teacher of mediation and is approved under Part 146 in New York as a mediation trainer. She is currently co-teaching the small claims Mediation Clinic at the Brooklyn Law School. \nIs there Continuing Education Credit? Our participants consistently report that this program reshapes not only how they approach conflict\, but how they understand communication\, decision-making\, and relationship dynamics. Here’s how this training applies to different professional roles: \nMediators and Conflict Resolution Professionals \nWhether you are newly exploring mediation or seeking to deepen your practice\, this training offers a hands-on approach that moves beyond traditional tools and techniques. You will learn how to facilitate conversations where parties truly understand each other – often for the first time – and co-create durable\, meaningful resolutions. \nLawyers\, Collaborative Professionals\, and Ombuds \nFor legal professionals\, \, this model shifts the focus from advocacy and positioning to understanding and informed choice. You will learn how to support clients in engaging constructively with conflict while still addressing legal realities – without relying on control\, pressure\, or adversarial dynamics. \nHuman Resources Leaders\, Managers\, and Nonprofit Staff \nIf you are responsible for managing people\, teams\, or organizational culture\, this training provides a vital toolkit for navigating interpersonal tension\, staff grievances\, and sensitive conversations. The Understanding-Based model helps you foster clarity\, empathy\, and accountability – leading to more resilient teams and healthier workplace dynamics. \nExecutive Coaches\, Consultants\, and Educators \nWhen your work centers on growth\, transformation\, and leadership\, conflict is often just beneath the surface. This training equips you with a new lens and skill set for working with clients or groups who are stuck in disagreement\, misalignment\, or tension. You will be better prepared to support breakthroughs – whether in strategic planning\, coaching conversations\, or facilitation work. \nAnyone Seeking a More Meaningful Way to Work with Conflict \nYou do not need to be a professional mediator to benefit from this training. If you are the person people come to when there is tension – in your family\, workplace\, or community – or if you want to better understand and navigate conflict in your own life\, this training offers a practical\, compassionate framework that will change how you listen\, speak\, and relate to others. \nProgram Format\nThis online training features a mix of short presentations\, live demonstrations\, and small group role plays in  full-length practice mediations. You’ll have the chance to practice in a safe\, supportive environment with real-time feedback and coaching from experienced trainers. \nSchedule Overview\nEach day is 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM PST | 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM CST | 11:00 AM – 7:30 PM EST\, with breaks throughout the day. Participants are encouraged to log in at 7:50 AM PST to troubleshoot Zoom and settle in to Canvas\, our e-learning platform. \nAbout the Center for Understanding in Conflict and Our Model\nThe Center for Understanding in Conflict (CUC) was founded over four decades ago by Gary Friedman and Jack Himmelstein\, who pioneered a radical approach to mediation and conflict resolution. Drawing from their experiences as lawyers\, educators\, and people impacted by conflict themselves\, they developed what is now known as the Understanding-Based model. \nThis approach challenges the traditional win-lose\, adversarial frameworks that dominate many legal and organizational systems. Instead of seeing conflict as something to suppress\, manage\, or solve through external authority\, the Understanding-Based model embraces it as an opportunity for deeper human connection which supports the impulse to work together towards mutually beneficial solutions. . \nAt its heart\, the model is grounded in four core principles: \n\nUnderstanding – cultivating deep awareness of oneself\, others\, and the conflict itself\nResponsibility – inviting parties to take ownership of the process and outcome\nWorking Together – choosing dialogue and direct engagement over separation or shuttle diplomacy\nGoing Under the Conflict – exploring what lies beneath positions to get to meaning\, emotion\, and deeper needs\n\nSince the 1980s\, thousands of professionals – including mediators\, lawyers\, coaches\, therapists\, managers\, and community leaders – have trained with the Center. Many have incorporated the Understanding-Based model into their lives and work\, transforming not just how they navigate conflict\, but how they relate to others and themselves. \nThis training is a continuation of that legacy. It’s more than just a skills workshop – it’s an invitation to participate in a movement that honors empathy\, autonomy\, and connection at the center of conflict resolution. \nProgram Trainers\nIvan Alter is an attorney and mediator with offices in Westchester County\, New York\, and New York City. \nMarie MacNichol is a mediator and intellectual property attorney with more than 25 years of industry experience in resolving patent\, licensing and contract disputes and litigations. She founded her mediation practice to help parties in conflict by providing neutral and impartial conflict resolution services that promote understanding of all issues in a respectful and non-coercive environment. Marie is listed in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Roster of Mediators. \nMelanie Rowen is a mediator and conflict coach who believes in the power of understanding-based conflict resolution to transform our world. She frequently trains individuals and groups on conflict resolution skills with the Center for Understanding in Conflict and in other settings. \nMelanie has worked in professional development for many years\, including previously as the Associate Director for Public Interest & Public Sector Programs at Berkeley Law and in attorney development at Latham & Watkins LLP. In her law practice career\, Melanie litigated civil rights cases\, including marriage equality\, employment discrimination\, issues involving transgender and gender non-conforming youth and their families and issues facing LGBTQI elders\, at the National Center for LGBTQ Rights. \n \nTrainers\nGary J. Friedman has been practicing law as a mediator with Mediation Law Offices in Mill Valley\, California since 1976\, integrating mediative principles into the practice of law and the resolution of legal disputes. Co-founder of the Center for Understanding in Conflict (formerly the Center for Mediation in Law)\, he has been teaching mediation since 1980. Prior to his work as a mediator\, he practiced law as a trial lawyer with Friedman and Friedman in Bridgeport\, Connecticut. After several years as an advocate\, he sought a new approach to resolving disputes through increasing the participation of the parties in the resolution of their differences. At that time\, he and his colleague\, Jack Himmelstein\, began to develop the Understanding-based model that is now practiced extensively in the United States and Europe. As one of the first lawyer mediators and a primary force in the current mediation movement\, he has used this model to complete over one thousand mediations in the last two decades He has mediated numerous two-party and multi-party disputes in the commercial and non-profit realms\, in the area of intellectual property\, real estate\, corporate\, personnel\, partnership formations and dissolutions\, and family law. Melanie’s mediation\, coaching and training practice focuses on improving dynamics where ongoing relationships are essential\, including workplace teams\, family and community organizational settings. \nCaitlin Meredith\, MPH\, MA\, is a mediator\, coach and conflict skills trainer who works with individuals\, organizations and families navigating transitions and conflict. Her curiosity about conflict led to 13 years with Doctors Without Borders in war zones in sub-Saharan Africa\, and then to consulting in the criminal justice system. After working in the aftermath of big conflicts\, she decided to learn more about preventing and working through disagreements through courageous conversations. This curiosity led her to the Center for Understanding in Conflict. In addition to her private practice\, Caitlin volunteers her time as a mediator for community and court-based mediation programs in Colorado and California. She also teaches Core Mediation and Negotiation classes at the Monterey College of Law and co-hosts a podcast about women’s financial literacy. In all of her endeavors\, Caitlin finds honest\, clear and vulnerable communication to be the key ingredient for creating meaningful connections in our lives.
