SUMMARY:Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them
DESCRIPTION:Date May 10\, 2022\nTime 12 PM PDT • 3 PM EDT • 9 PM CEST\nCost $47\nAll webinars are free for CUC Connect members. Click here to learn more.\nEverybody lies (and gets lied to)\, every day. As mediators\, journalists\, lawyers and negotiators\, we encounter more lies than most. In conflict\, there are countless incentives to exaggerate\, embellish\, omit and deceive. So what do we do? How do we know if someone is lying? And how do we deal with it\, when they are? \nIn this interactive webinar\, mediator Gary Friedman and journalist Amanda Ripley will draw on research and their own experiences to explore when and why people lie\, how to reduce the odds of destructive lying in conflict—and how to respond to lies and liars once we encounter them (without making everything worse). \nParticipants will be challenged to investigate: \n\nHow can we determine if someone is lying?\n Which lies are worth ignoring\, if any?\nIs there an ideal way to expose a lie?\nIs it ever useful to connect with someone who is lying?\nIs it possible to have compassion for a liar–and still have integrity?\n\nFaculty\nAmanda Ripley\n \nAmanda Ripley is a New York Times bestselling author\, an investigative journalist and host of the Slate podcast How To! She’s spent her career trying to make sense of complicated human mysteries\, from how people get out of dysfunctional conflicts to how countries educate virtually all their kids to think for themselves. Amanda’s most recent book is High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out\, published by Simon & Schuster in 2021. Her previous books include The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes—and Why\, which was published in 15 countries and turned into a PBS documentary\, and The Smartest Kids in the World—and How They Got That Way\, a New York Times bestseller which was also turned into a documentary film. She writes for the Atlantic\, the Washington Post\, Politico and other outlets\, and she has received more than 80 hours of mediation training (through the Center for Understanding in Conflict\, of course). She is also the co-founder of Good Conflict LLC\, which helps organizations cultivate healthy conflict. Previously\, Amanda spent a decade writing about human behavior for Time magazine in New York\, Washington\, and Paris. \nGary Friedman\n \nGary J. Friedman has been practicing law as a mediator with Mediation Law Offices in Mill Valley\, California since 1976\, integrating mediative principles into the practice of law and the resolution of legal disputes. Co-founder of the Center for Understanding in Conflict (formerly the Center for Mediation in Law)\, he has been teaching mediation since 1980. Prior to his work as a mediator\, he practiced law as a trial lawyer with Friedman and Friedman in Bridgeport\, Connecticut. After several years as an advocate\, he sought a new approach to resolving disputes through increasing the participation of the parties in the resolution of their differences. At that time\, he and his colleague\, Jack Himmelstein\, began to develop the Understanding-based model that is now practiced extensively in the United States and Europe. As one of the first lawyer mediators and a primary force in the current mediation movement\, he has used this model to complete over one thousand mediations in the last two decades He has mediated numerous two-party and multi-party disputes in the commercial and non-profit realms\, in the area of intellectual property\, real estate\, corporate\, personnel\, partnership formations and dissolutions\, and family law.

SUMMARY:Power: Understanding or Coercion?
DESCRIPTION:Date April 12\, 2022\nTime 10 AM PDT • 1 PM EDT • 7 PM CEST\nCost $47\nAll webinars are free for CUC Connect members. Click here to learn more.\nCentral to our approach to conflict is to maximize the potential of the power of understanding in the three dimensions of self\, other and external realities. Understanding is a quite different and challenging alternative to the power of coercion. These dimensions have a potential power to transform and help guide people to agreements created by them that they feel invested in and are more likely to live up to since the solution comes from their understanding of themselves\, each other\, and the situation. When in conflict\, people often gravitate towards the power of coercion. Coercion may produce a result but often at the cost of later boomeranging when one or both parties sit with the fallout. In this webinar\, Gary Friedman will discuss how to develop understanding in coercive situations. \nBy attending this webinar\, you will: \n– Understand the potential of the power of understanding \n– Understand limits of coercion \n– How to create understanding in the face of coercion \nFaculty\nGary Friedman \n \nGary J. SUMMARY:Neutrality and Objectivity
DESCRIPTION:Date January 10\, 2022\nTime 12 PM PST • 3 PM EST • 9 PM CET\nCost $47\nAll webinars are free for CUC Connect members. Click here to learn more.\nWhen we think of maintaining neutrality\, many people believe that the goal is to be “objective” – to avoid taking on\, or even seeming to take on\, the experiences\, feelings and beliefs of either party. But in fact\, getting close to the parties is crucial to supporting them in reaching a solution that works for both. In this webinar\, Gary Freidman and Katherine Miller will explore how “positive neutrality” – letting go of the idea of objectivity and instead working to connect with both parties\, including on an emotional level – allows us to serve them better. \nParticipants in this webinar will take away: \n\nTechniques to engage with parties using positive neutrality\nAn understanding of the pros and cons of positive neutrality versus traditional “objective” neutrality\nDealing with judgment when it comes up and blocks connection\n\nFaculty\nGary J. \nKatherine Eisold Miller is an attorney practicing mediation and collaborative practice in Westchester County\, NY. SUMMARY:I Knew What Would Happen
DESCRIPTION:Humans like to create and tell stories. When a conflict arises\, the parties craft their individual stories about what has already happened and what they expect will lead to the end of the conflict. When they engage a conflict professional\, their story adapts to include how the conflict professional will influence the outcome\, typically to their advantage. When the conflict professional walks into the room\, they also have a story about what the process will look like and sometimes even their own picture of the outcome. In this webinar\, we will explore the role of expectations in working through conflict. How do the parties’ and conflict professionals’ stories about their roles\, responsibilities\, process\, and possible outcomes impact working through the conflict? How do we work with these stories and expectations during the conflict resolution process? \n\nDate October 18\, 2021\nTime 12 PM PDT • 3 PM EDT • 9 PM CEST\nCost $47 All webinars are free for CUC Connect members. Click here to learn more.\nFacilitators\n \nCatherine Conner has been a mediation and collaborative practice trainer since 2004. Specially trained “Court Involved Therapists” (CITs) are desperately needed to serve this rapidly growing mental health population. Well-trained CITs are a critical support for families trying to successfully navigate the complex world of the family law court system\, including child custody cases. Inappropriate treatment\, from an inadequately trained therapist\, may escalate family conflict and cause significant damage. On the other hand\, specialized training and interventions that incorporate the latest research and best practices can maximize the outcome for all family members. An effective Court Involved Therapist\, who is trained to maintain a forensic mindset and to collaborate with multi-disciplinary professionals\, can make all the difference in these often contentious divorce disputes. \nThis Court Involved Therapist training program curriculum will address: \n\nFamily Law overview for Mental Health Professionals\, Professional Guidelines\nMediation\, Collaboration and Litigation\nWhat happens in Court\, communicating with the Courts/attorneys\, subpoenas/requests for letters/ declarations and testifying in Court\, working with Minors Counsel\, Legal\, and Ethical Requirements for the Court Involved Therapist\nCo-parent Counseling\, High Conflict Co-parenting\, High Conflict Personalities\nForensic Clinical Interviewing children in the legal process\nResist/Refuse cases\, Reunification Counseling and Family Therapy\nFamily interventions – reoccurring themes in Court Involved Work\nSupervised Visitation and Therapeutic Supervised Visitation\nIntimate Partner Violence: addressing safety\, arrival/departure protocols\nAddressing child\, drug and alcohol abuse in Parenting Plans\nParenting Coordinator and Private Child Custody Recommending Counselor\nOverview of child custody evaluations\nSpecial needs children in Family Court Processes\n\nWho should attend this training?\n\nMental health professionals\nLicensed Marriage and Family Therapists\nPsychologists\nLicensed Therapists\nLicensed Social Workers\nInterns in training\n\nThis intensive course will provide you with a certification of completion and the ability to begin Court Involved work. SUMMARY:Intimate Partner Violence and Consensual Dispute Resolution
DESCRIPTION: \nA recording of this webinar is available for purchase in our store.\nDomestic violence (DV) is prevalent and gendered. It is a pattern of power and control over a person exercised through manipulation\, isolation\, coercion/threats\, and intimidation. In cases involving DV\, mediation does not work and can even be unsafe and harmful. In this webinar\, we’ll dive into what domestic violence is and explore how mediators can assess parties’ dynamics when screening for domestic violence. We’ll also discuss the dangers of mediating the wrong case and why making DV screening ubiquitous in mediation is so important. \nBy attending this webinar\, you will: \n\nLearn about the pattern of power and control and the various ways of control\nHave tools to improve how you screen for DV in your mediation cases\nHave a better understanding of assessing the risks of mediation in cases involving DV\n\n  \nFacilitators\n \nBefore becoming a mediator in 2009\, Antoinette Delruelle represented victims of domestic violence in family cases and divorces for 18 years at the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG)\, a NYC free legal services organization. She has taught mediation to legal services attorneys and court staff professionals and has participated as a teaching assistant at mediation trainings of the Center for Understanding in Conflict. When the mediator is centered in themselves and coming from that place of authenticity\, it is helpful to the parties who are then free to be themselves as well. \nOutcomes for attending this webinar \n\n\n\n\nSensitizing yourself to appropriate mediator behavior\nGuidance for what to do when you don’t know what to do\nBusting the myth of professional persona\n\n\n\n\nFacilitators\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Parties Understanding Each Other (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:For mediators\, it is a dream to get parties in conflict to appreciate each other in ways they have not done so before. When this process\, particularly popular among new mediators\, ultimately fails\, too often the parties in conflict are siloed and are obliged to resolve their conflict apart. At the heart of our Understanding-based model is the concept that the best path to resolution includes the parties solving their problem\, together. In this webinar\, we provide a more structured\, effective way to help parties in conflict better understand each other in a process often wrought by complicated emotions that are challenging for the conflicted parties to express. \nOutcomes\nBy participating in this webinar\, you will: \n\nLearn how to structure an understanding-based mediation process\nGain tools into facilitating understanding among conflicted parties\nDevelop new insights in the importance of having parties in conflict find their resolution together\n\nDate:  November 23\, 2020 \nTime:  12:00 pm Pacific\, 3:00 pm Eastern\, 8:00 pm Central Europe (adjust for your time zone) \nCost:  $47 (Free to CUC Connect members.  For more information\, click here.) \nFacilitators

SUMMARY:The "Bully" (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:One of the disconcerting challenges in mediation is forceful participants and bullying behavior\, which often lead to a failure in the mediation process. Sometimes individuals with active or competitive personalities are labeled as bullies\, resulting in conflict resolution professionals overlooking the pivotal positive strengths and capacities these “bullies” can bring to the resolution process. In this webinar\, we’ll examine attributes that are often classified as bullying\, delve into how parties perceive bullying\, and how we can turn bullies into benefactors. \nOutcomes\nBy participating in this webinar\, you will: \n\nLearn several techniques to help turn a “bully” into a benefactor\nDevelop tools to help identify what is truly intimidating behavior versus the behavioral response to conflict by personalities often mislabeled as bullies\nHave a better understanding of how to bridge the gap between active and passive participants\n\nDate:  October 26\, 2020 \nTime:  12:00 pm Pacific\, 3:00 pm Eastern\, 8:00 pm Central Europe (adjust for your time zone) \nCost:  $47 (Free to CUC Connect members.  For more information\, click here.)
