SUMMARY:2026 SCPI Retreat: Conflict and Compassion (MEXICO)
DESCRIPTION:In a world where the challenges around us – from climate change to political division to daily interpersonal tensions – can feel overwhelming\, how do we stay connected\, grounded\, and engaged without losing ourselves?\nWe invite you to step away from distractions and overwhelm and into a space of deeper listening – both inward and outward. Together\, we will explore how our emotional reactions shape how we show up in our lives and our work. By turning towards these reactions with curiosity and care\, we can cultivate a greater sense of resilience\, clarity\, and compassion. \n\nThis retreat is especially for those who regularly engage with conflict – mediators\, therapists\, lawyers\, human resource professionals\, activists\, journalists\, leaders\, and caregivers. Whether we want to or not\, we bring our full emotional selves into the room: frustration\, fear\, heartbreak\, and sometimes hope. These feelings\, often hidden or ignored\, can become powerful allies in helping us connect more authentically – with others and with ourselves. \n\nThrough reflective exercises\, dialogue\, role play\, and meditation\, we will look closely at our inner lives\, our work\, and our relationship to conflict. Together\, we’ll practice staying open\, present\, and available—even in the face of difficulty. \nWe’ll do this work in the serene and inspiring setting of Mar de Jade\, nestled on a peaceful stretch of the Pacific Coast north of Puerto Vallarta. This beautiful retreat center offers nourishing food\, yoga\, swimming\, and space to wander\, rest\, and restore. Long afternoon breaks allow time to relax\, connect with nature\, or simply enjoy the quiet. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this meaningful time of learning\, growth\, and connection. \n \nLocation\nMar De Jade Retreat Center\, Chacala\, Mexico.  Visit www.mardejade.com for additional information and photos. \n*A portion of proceeds from guests’ stays at Mar de Jade support its non-profit programs\, operated by MDJ Community Projects\, which currently include: El Jardín\, a Montessori – Waldorf inspired K – 9 school in Chacala; TAO de Jade a trade school for youth who have dropped out of secondary school because of economic hardship; and El Rancho\, an Organic Farm that supplies many of the products for Mar de Jade’s delicious meals. \n \nDates\n\nSaturday\, January 24\, 2026 through Saturday\, January 31\, 2026.\nOur first session will be on the morning of January 25 to allow for travel to Chacala on January 24 and we will end on the evening of January 30 to allow for return travel on January 31.\n\nTraining fee\n\nThe training fee (not inclusive of accommodation) is $1\,695.\nA $500 deposit is required to hold your place. SUMMARY:Self Reflection for Conflict Professionals
DESCRIPTION:August 31 – September 3\nTalloires\, France\nDownload registration Form\nCompassion and Conflict\nThe Center for Understanding in Conflict will once again be offering an intensive program in Talloires\, France in Self-Reflection and its relevance to working as a professional helping people in conflict. \nAll conflict professionals are welcome to attend\, including mediators\, lawyers\, therapists and anyone who works with people in conflict. Our working language will be English and fluency is a requisite for getting the most out of the program. \nProgram Overview\nWe are living in an age of outrage and division. Many of us feel called upon to stand up for our beliefs–and to find ways to reduce the animosity that we see online and all around us. This is difficult work\, and it can’t be done without clarity about ourselves. During this Conflict and Compassion retreat we will explore how our emotional reactions to the problems of the external world—from climate change to politics to interpersonal conflicts—influence our outward responses. Together\, we will investigate how deeper internal work can make us more resilient and useful in the complicated world we inhabit. \nPeople who work in conflict experience powerful emotional currents\, whether they want to or not. From mediators to journalists to politicians to therapists\, we can’t help but carry judgments and gut feelings into our work. Exasperation\, fear\, anger and other difficult emotions go with the job. But they don’t have to drain our spirit and motivation. We can learn to use these reactions to help us form deeper connections to the problems and people we encounter. And with connections come new possibilities for helping people find their way through conflict. \nThe program will be a combination of self-reflection exercises\, role-plays and didactic explanation. \nThis seminar can host up to 16 participants. \nFees\n€1\,250 for 24 hours of training\, coffee breaks\, and buffet lunches. \nFaculty\nNorman Fischer is a poet\, author\, Zen Buddhist priest and former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center. As founder of the Everyday Zen Foundation (www.everydayzen.org)\, his work with meditation practice has taken him into many corners of contemporary American life including the arts\, education\, hospice training\, education\, and lawyering as a spiritual path. Recently\, he began offering meditation training to engineers at Google. Norman has worked with the Center for Understanding in Conflict on inquiries that focus on bringing the calmness and insight of meditation practice directly into conflict situations. Norman has written 29 books. His latest books are Untitled Series: Life As It is and The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path. \nGary J. Friedman has been practicing law as a mediator with Mediation Law Offices in Mill Valley\, California since 1976\, integrating mediative principles into the practice of law and the resolution of legal disputes. At that time\, he and his colleague\, Jack Himmelstein\, began to develop the Understanding-based model that is now practiced extensively in the United States and Europe. As one of the first lawyer mediators and a primary force in the current mediation movement\, he has used this model to complete over one thousand mediations in the last two decades He has mediated numerous two-party and multi-party disputes in the commercial and non-profit realms\, in the area of intellectual property\, real estate\, corporate\, personnel\, partnership formations and dissolutions\, and family law. \nAccommodation\nThe event will be held at the Priory of the Tufts European University Center in Talloires\, France on the shores of Lake Annecy\, 45 minutes from Geneva\, Switzerland. \nTalloires has several charming small hotels within a few minutes walking distance from the Priory. SUMMARY:Self Reflection for Conflict Professionals - Blame and Vulnerability - Talloires\, France
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Understanding in Conflict will be offering an intensive program in Talloires\, France from August 28- 31\, 2018.  Gary Friedman and Norman Fischer will be the instructors. \nOur Self-Reflection programs intend to train participants in ways of accessing their inner lives while working with clients in conflict that are constructive for the professionals and productive for our clients.  We will learn together about connecting with our deeper impulses that fuel our commitment to working with people in conflict – such as compassion and the search for greater self understanding and mutual understanding \nThe theme of the program this year will be Blame and Vulnerability. In these turbulent times\, it is particularly important to recognize how both blame and vulnerability are inevitable in conflicts.  In this program we will work to identify\, understand and work constructively with  both blame and vulnerability through deepening our own relationship with both.  It is particularly important to  recognize the relation between them to provide ourselves and our clients with a perspective that allows for a passage through conflict that responds to all of our deepest impulses and aspirations. \nThe program will be a combination of self-reflection exercises\, role plays and didactic explanation.    All conflict professionals are welcome to attend\, including mediators\, lawyers\, therapists and anyone who works with people in conflict. \nFor more information and to register\, email a.weingart@atoutmediation.ch

SUMMARY:2017 Self Reflection for Conflict Professional Intensive (West Coast with Virtual Option)
DESCRIPTION:The  Self Reflection for Conflict Professionals Intensive (“SCPI”) program starts February 3\, 2017 and ends June 2\, 2017. \n“SCPI has had an enormous impact on my work as a mediator. My presence in the mediation room is stronger\, more authentic\, and more compassionate because of it.” Emily Doskow\, Attorney and Mediator \nPROGRAM CONTENT: \nThe focus of the program is training participants in ways of accessing their inner lives while working with clients in conflict that are constructive for the professionals and productive for our clients.  We will learn together about connecting with our deeper impulses that fuel our commitment to working with people in conflict – such as compassion and the search for greater self-understanding and mutual understanding. \nWe also learn about dealing with the barriers to that understanding\, such as judgment\, anger and the desire for control\, and how to recognize and work with those barriers to bring us closer to ourselves and our clients.  The program includes a number of ways of sensitizing ourselves to our inner lives and relationship to people in conflict\, including a meditative perspective\, journaling\, and regular meetings with peers. \nThis inquiry is relevant not only to mediation but also to collaborative practice\, negotiation\, and traditional law practice. \nFor more information\, visit our SCPI webpage. \n \nDATES: \nFebruary 3 and June 2 — All-day meetings at Green Gulch Farm from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm (The June meeting integrates the participants with the existing SCPI community in a joint meeting.) \nMonthly meetings from 4:30 – 7:00 pm in Mill Valley:  February 27\, March 27\, April 24 and May 15. \nWith sufficient interest\, there will also be an option for a virtual group for long distance participation in the monthly meetings.  The dates and times for the virtual group will be set after registration to find a time that fits for all virtual participants.  Email us at catherineconner@understandinginconflict.org to let us know you are interested in the virtual group. \nCOST:    The cost of the entire program will be $1\,000.00 and will include the two all-day and four monthly meetings\, as well as an individual meeting with one of our teachers and a copy of Gary Friedman’s new book\, Inside Out: How Conflict Professionals Can Use Self-Reflection to Help Their Clients.  \nTHIS PROGRAM IS FOR YOU!  The program is for anyone whose work includes helping people work through conflict\, including mediators\, lawyers\, mental health professionals\, collaborative professionals\, human resource managers\, team leaders\, volunteer coordinators and other similar professionals. There will be a limited number of participants.  Please note that distance participation is an option for the monthly meetings.  Contact us if you are interested in this option. \nTRAINERS:     The group will be led by a combination of Norman Fischer\, Chris Fortin\, both Zen priests from Everyday Zen\, and Gary Friedman and Catherine Conner\, mediators and lawyers (each meeting will have two teachers).  We have found this mix of professions brings a deeper and stronger understanding to accessing our inner lives when working with people in conflict. \nLOCATION:  The all day meetings will be at Green Gulch Zen Center in Muir Beach.  The in person monthly meetings are held in Mill Valley. \nContinuing Education Credits: \nMental Health: The Center for Understanding in Conflict is approved by the California Psychological Association to provide continuing professional education for psychologists. The Center for Understanding in Conflict maintains responsibility for this program and its content. BBS licensees may also receive credit from The Center for Understanding in Conflict as a provider approved by the California Psychological Association.
