SUMMARY:Inside Out Advanced Training in Heidelberg
DESCRIPTION:This will be a two day intensive program on September 13-14\, 2019 in self-reflection in action and its relevance to working as a professional to help people in conflict. \nThe focus of the program will be to train participants in ways of accessing their inner lives while working with clients in conflict that are constructive for the professionals and productive for our clients.\n\nWe will learn together about connecting with our deeper impulses that fuel our commitment to working with people in conflict – such as compassion and the search for greater self understanding and mutual understanding.\n\nWe also learn about dealing with the barriers to that understanding\, such as judgment\, anger and the desire for control\, and how to recognize and work with those barriers to bring us closer to ourselves and our clients.\n\nMethod\n\nThe program will be a combination of self-reflection exercises\, role plays and didactic explanation\, using the book ‘Inside Out: Working through the Conflict’ by Gary Friedman (American Bar Association incooperation with Harvard’s Program on Negotiation).\n\n\nTarget Audience\nThis training is designed for professionals in mediation. Participants should have a lot of experience in mediation processes or conflict resolution. You should be able to share and discuss an individual case with other participants during the training. All conflict professionals are welcome to attend\, including mediators\, lawyers\, therapists and anyone who works with people in conflict.\n\n\nFaculty\nGary Friedman\, Co-founder of The Center for Understanding in Conflict\, formerly the Center for Mediation in Law in Mill Valley\, California.\n\n\n\nHe has practiced law since 1970\, serving since 1976 primarily as a mediator of commercial and family disputes with Mediation Law Offices in Mill Valley. He has conducted introductory\, intermediate and advanced training programs in mediation and mediative approaches to the practice of law and conflict resolution throughout the United States since 1979\, and in Europe since 1989. He is the author of numerous publications on mediation\, including ‘A Guide to Divorce Mediation’ and‘Challenging Conflict: Mediation Through Understanding’.\n\n\nProfessor Friedman has taught negotiation and mediation at various law schools and continuing legal education programs throughout the United States including\, more recently\, through the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation and through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. His most recent book is entitled ‘Inside Out: How Conflict Professionals Can Use Self-Reflection to Help Their Clients’.\n\n\nGary Friedman will be assisted by Lis Ripke. SUMMARY:Working Through Conflict Together:  Listening to Understand
DESCRIPTION:The journey of supporting a gender-expansive child may involve some interpersonal conflict within the family around how best to provide that support\, even when everyone wants to do the right thing. To resolve conflict effectively\, we need to understand each other. This workshop will introduce a form of active listening\, often used by mediators\, designed to help people get insight into themselves\, each other\, and their disagreement. Participants will get to practice using these active listening skills in a safe setting.
